STAGE

"Although I think of myself as a songwriter, I didn't know how much I loved writing for the theatre until Privates On Parade accidently came my way in 1976. Since then, I've composed the scores for over 25 stage musicals, seven of them for London's West End. Some succeeded, some didn't work, but my feeling is you have to keep going, never stop writing, do your best, believe in it, and if your show gets on, wonderful, but if it closes without being translated into 50 languages despite your wife liking it a lot, that’s life, on to the next! I'm grateful to at least still have the opportunity to do what I love doing, which is writing songs and hearing them performed."

A treasured First Night telegram from Stephen Sondheim hangs on the wall in Denis' studio, framed: "WISH I COULD BE THERE TO START THE RHYTHMIC CLAPPING! - Steve."
